Year Five Curriculum
Outlined below is the curriculum your child is following this year. We hope that it will be of use to you when discussing school with your child and looking for ways in which you can support them at home.
Following the new Curriculum for Literacy, the children will be analysing the features of story openings and studying play scripts. They will read a range of poems by significant poets, analysing and comparing the poetic styles uses. They will also read and analyse stories by significant children’s authors. They will be made aware of the differences between written and spoken language, they will use independent spelling strategies and work on grammar and punctuation will be stressed.
Following the new curriculum for maths, children will cover work on place value, rounding numbers, fractions, decimals, shape and space, measures and solving problems. Work on tables will continue using both multiplication and division facts. We will also learn the standard written methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
This term we are going to be learning about life-cycles in both animals and plants. We will learn about the life cycle of common animals and plants and will look at the process of reproduction. We will also look at the properties of materials.
This year we are going to be learning about the history of computing. We will look at the machines that were used as code breakers during the Second World War and how computers have evolved since then. The children will also learn to start coding using Kodu where they will design, code and debug their own games. The National Museum of Computing at Bletchley Park near Milton Keynes would be a great place to visit during the half-term.
Pupils should continue to develop a chronologically secure knowledge and understanding of British, local and world history. They should know connections, contrasts and trends over time and develop the appropriate use of historical terms. Pupils will be learning Britain’s settlement by Anglo-Saxons and Scots, the Viking and Anglo-Saxon struggle of England to the time of Edward the Confessor.
We will be using Charanga Music Scheme by Bird College. We will listen to and learn a number of rock songs such as ‘Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey.
This term we will be studying different types of Bible literature and what it means to us. Recognising that people have different beliefs and ideas about God, we will explore various questions relating to faith and think about what challenges, influences and inspires us as individuals.
This term we will be having swimming lessons at Sidcup Leisure Centre. Swimming replaces indoor games for this term. During weekly swimming lessons children will, according to their ability, be able to gain confidence in the water, develop strokes and improve their stamina. This term we will be developing the skills involved in rounders and basketball, building on what was learnt last year.
The children will continue using “tout le monde” and other school resources. We will also include seasonal activities.
Our artwork will enable the children to gain experience using a variety of materials in order to create pictures and artefacts e.g. paint, sketching pencils and collage, linking to other curriculum subjects. In Design Technology we will be looking at different types of bread and learning how bread is made. The children will then design and make their own bread.
The teaching and learning opportunities that we provide within Year 5 are aimed at introducing the concepts of physical geography. Pupils will extend their knowledge and understanding beyond the local area to include the United Kingdom and Europe, North and South America. This will include the location and characteristics of a range of the world’s most significant human and physical features.
We will be starting off the term looking at various stories.
Fiction: significant children’s writers
Non-fiction: instructional texts, recounts and reports
Sentence structure, proof reading and drafting skills, direct speech, advanced punctuation marks and to continue to develop reading and writing through a range of genres.
Following the new maths curriculum, children will be learning and exploring numbers and the number system including fractions, decimals and percentages. We will also continue to reinforce and extend use of standard written methods for adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. We will be learning how to interpret basic statistics including graphs, tables and tallies and will be learning about 2D and 3D shapes.
This term we will continue with our on-going topic of life-cycles looking in more detail at the different life cycles of plants, birds, insects, reptiles, amphibians and humans. We will continue this topic throughout the spring and summer observing changes in the local environment.
We will also be learning about the Earth, Sun and Moon and why day and night and the seasons occur. We will learn about the phases of the Moon and the orbit of the Earth around the Sun and the Moon’s orbit around the earth. A visit to the NASA website would be a great place to find out more.
In computing this term we will continue to lean about the history of computing and the impact that technology has on our lives. We will build on the programming that children learnt last year by learning how to program and control robots. We will be using our new Lego Mindstorm robots and the children will learn to program them to perform simple tasks using a range of sensors and inputs. Throughout the term we will be using computers across the curriculum to research and present information. We will also be looking at how computers can be used to create and manipulate images and graphics.
Children will be learning about Greece and the ancient Greek civilisation. We will be looking at the Greeks’ lives at home, work and play. We will learn about the difference between Athens and Sparta and will talk about ‘democracy’. We will also be learning about their gods and goddesses and warfare.
This term we will be looking at toys with moving parts. The children will then design, make and evaluate their own moving toy with a cam mechanism.
