The reception year group follow the Early Years Foundation stage curriculum which is divided into seven areas of learning.
All of these areas of development will be covered within the Reception class through topics.
Literacy and Communication
A range of stories, poems and non-fiction books. Children will be taught in a variety of ways i.e. whole class, group and individually. They will be taught different strategies to help them read, such as knowing the sounds of the letters, pictorial clues and whether the text makes sense.
The children will be given the opportunity to write for a variety of purposes and will be encouraged to use their phonic knowledge and sight vocabulary.
Speaking and Listening
The children will be following the DFEE “Letters and Sounds Programme” in which they will learn the letter sounds and names. The children will begin to apply this phonic knowledge in reading and writing.
The children will be focusing on numbers, shape, weight, capacity, time, length and data handling. The children will be consolidating knowledge of reading, writing and counting to 10, as well as extending knowledge by using numbers 0-20.
Understanding the World
Our topics this term are people who help us. The children will learn about the Police, Fire Fighters, Nurses, Dentists and many more. They will experiment with mixing different colours by using different equipment.
Children will also be encouraged to develop their I.C.T. skills such as word processing, keyboard and mouse control. They will use programs such as paint, talking books and Espresso.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
The children will be encouraged to have a developing awareness of their own feelings and be sensitive to the needs, views and feelings of others. This will be taught through a range of stories, games and class activities.
Expressive Arts and Design
The children will have the opportunity to explore different media, for example, paint, pastels and clay. They will be able to experiment with still life drawing, printing, model making and collages.
This term the children will have the opportunity to develop their special awareness and dance skills by moving to music and percussion instruments. They will be playing playground games during outdoor PE. Also children will have their first experience of gymnastics and using the equipment in the hall. Children will need a pair of tracksuit bottoms for the outside PE lesson.
The children will be taught to form their letters correctly, using the pen pal scheme.
The children will be learning about ‘Special Events’ focusing on baptism. They will then learn about Easter and the significance of ‘new life’.
Talks and Visits
As part of our “People who help us” topic, the Reception children will have talks by different professionals.
Monday, 12th January – Police talk
Friday, 30th January – Fire Brigade talk with a fire engine
Monday 2nd February – A Paramedic Talk
Tuesday, 10th February – A search and rescue talk with trained dogs
Tuesday, 17th March – Dentist talk. At 8.45 a.m. onwards, the dentist is available to talk through any dental concerns you have about your child.
Summer Term topic letters will be published at the beginning of the Summer Term.
